2009 MS Kick For The Cure

$65,557 raised for MS care and research!

Once again the 2009 MS Kick For The Cure was an overwhelming success, raising a record $65,557 for MS care and research. Thank you to all of the players, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who helped make this possible.

On behalf of all the people living with MS here on the Island and everywhere in the world we thank you and applaud your efforts toward helping us one day find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

Summary of the Day's Events

7:58 am: Pregame ceremonies are taking place: event organizer Kevin James is giving the players their instructions for the game and outlining the rest of the day's events. We should be under way in a few minutes.

8:02 am: The national anthem rings out across Hampton Park. Kevin held a moment of silence at center field for Karen McFadzean who passed away recently. The 2009 MS Kick For The Cure will be played in memory of Karen.

8:08 am: The referee blows his whistle and the 2009 MS Kick For The Cure is under way!

10:54 am: Nearly three hours into the 2009 MS Kick For The Cure and the players are still going strong. The weather today is slightly overcast and much cooler than the previous several days have been, which is making for very comfortable playing conditions.

12:01 pm: Four hours down, one more to go before half time. Kool FM is here providing music during the game, and Freybe's has supplied smokies and european wieners which are now sizzling on the BBQ. If you're in the Victoria area, come out and enjoy an afternoon of soccer with us at Hampton Park! There is a silent auction in progress, photographs and videos of the game for sale, and don't miss your chance to win the Ball of Fortune! All proceeds go directly to the 2009 MS Kick For The Cure.

12:30 pm: Sherry McGarry steps on to the pitch to take a shift before half time, drawing enthusiastic applause from the players and spectators on the sidelines.

1:00 pm: The half-time whistle sounds.

1:05 pm: Tracy Gibson from the MS Society thanked everyone for coming out today to help end MS. She talked about how the MS Society helps and supports those living with MS, and where all the money raised by the MS Kick For The Cure ends up going. She gave a special thanks to Kevin, Darcie and Ruth and all the volunteers and supporters who help make the MS Kick For The Cure run successfully.

1:06 pm: Kevin tells everyone that over the first three years of the MS Kick For The Cure we have raised more than $104,000 for MS care and research!

1:10 pm: Kevin presented a plaque to the Gorge Soccer Association for their incredible support over the first four years of the MS Kick For The Cure for donating the field and facilities.

1:20 pm: The second half is under way. We start off with a women vs. women shift.

3:02 pm: Three hours to go. The pace may have slowed a bit, but spirits remain high.

3:15 pm: Kevin takes a turn on the pitch.

4:15 pm: Kevin announces that the next three shifts will begin with 5 minutes of "speed walk soccer" - nobody on on the pitch is allowed to run!

5:15 pm: We're in the home stretch now, less than an hour to go. At this point we're seeing a bit of sloppy play, as well as a few on-field antics: a player from the White team dribbled around the Orange team's keeper, stopped the ball on the goal line, dropped to the ground and headed it into the back of the net.

5:58 pm: It's the final shift, everyone on the field at once!

6:12 pm: The final whistle blows, bringing the 2009 MS Kick For The Cure to a close. Post-game ceremonies are about to begin.

6:20 pm: Kevin thanked the organizing committee, volunteers and players for everything they have done to make the 2009 MS Kick For The Cure such huge success. He announced the results of the silent auction, and drew prizes for many of the players.

6:40 pm: Kevin announced that a grand total of $65,557 was raised this year for the 2009 MS Kick For The Cure!
